چکیده

This study presents a two-dimensional variational approach to retrieving raindrop size distributions (DSDs) from polarimetric radar data in the presence of attenuation. A two-parameter DSD model, the constrained-gamma model, is used to represent rain DSDs. Three polarimetric radar measurements, reflectivity (ZH), differential reflectivity (ZDR) and specific differential phase (KDP), are optimally used to correct for the attenuation and retrieve DSDs by taking into account measurement error effects. Retrieval results with simulated data demonstrate that the proposed algorithm performs well. Applications to real data collected by the X-band CASA (Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere) radars and the C-band OU-PRIME (University of Oklahoma – Polarimetric Radar for Innovations in Meteorology and Engineering) radar also demonstrate the efficacy of this approach.

High-resolution Rainfall Rate and Dsd Estimation from X-band Polarimetric Radar Measurements

This study proposes investigation of new attenuation correction and microphysical retrieval methods for X-band polarimetric radar (XPOL). It will concentrate on exploring the dependence of the retrieval on raindrop size distribution variability, and its sensitivity with respect to the selection of oblateness-size relation (or axial ratio) and maximum diameter limit. Variations in the assumed fo...

Drop Shape and Dsd Retrieval with an X-band Dual Polarization Radar

There is a renewed interest in the use of X-band weather radars, due to specific advantages such as applications to rainfall estimation in light rain, monitoring of sensitive areas that are inadequately covered by operational radar networks as well as the radar network concept introduced by the Center for Collaborative Adaptive Sensing of the Atmosphere (CASA) (Chandrasekar et al. 2004). The us...

Estimation of Raindrop Size Distribution Parameters from Polarimetric Radar Measurements

Estimation of raindrop size distribution over large spatial and temporal scales has been a long-standing goal of polarimetric radar. Algorithms to estimate the parameters of a gamma raindrop size distribution model from polarimetric radar observations of reflectivity, differential reflectivity, and specific differential phase are developed. Differential reflectivity is the most closely related ...

Polarimetric Radar Estimators Based on a Constrained Gamma Drop Size Distribution Model

Raindrop size distribution (DSD) retrieval from remote radar measurements or from in situ disdrometer measurements is an important area of research. If the shape ( ) and slope ( ) of a three-parameter gamma distribution n(D) N0D exp( D ) are related to one another, as recent disdrometer measurements suggest, the gamma DSD model is simplified to a two-parameter DSD, that is, a constrained gamma ...

Rainfall rate retrieval in presence of path attenuation using C-band polarimetric weather radars

Weather radar systems are very suitable tools for the monitoring of extreme rainfall events providing measurements with high spatial and temporal resolution over a wide geographical area. Nevertheless, radar rainfall retrieval at C-band is prone to several error sources, such as rain path attenuation which affects the accuracy of inversion algorithms. In this paper, the so-called rain profiling...
